The Debate Begins: Who deserves a Championship?

ATLATA- Maybe by now you have been able to take a breath and collect your thoughts after your initial reaction to Boise States thrilling 33-30 victory over Virginia Tech.  Whether you were ecstatic at the potential BCS buster or deflated by the inevitable season long discussion that is to follow, it was a fantastic game.  Now the debate will begin: 12-0 Boise State or 12-1 SEC or Big 12 champ?

I am firm in my belief that the Broncos schedule is not even close to being strong enough to make me feel that the deserve a chance to play for the National Championship.  They might be able to beat an Ohio State or a Texas in a one game scenario, but I do not believe their unscathed navigation of a cream puff schedule gives them any right to play for a championship.

Beating Virginia Tech proves that Boise State can be a decent team that has a 1-26 record against top five teams.  Virginia Tech is in a rebuilding year on a defense that returned 5 starters from last year’s team.  While I believe Virginia Tech is a good team that needed to sharpen up a few areas of their game, this win proves to me that they can beat good team with a lot of time to prepare.  Lets see how they look next week for…. Wyoming.  We all know that other then Oregon State, who just lost to TCU, Boise States schedule is nothing short of weak.

–       My argument is not that Boise State has more time to prepare than their opponents; each team has the same amount of time to prepare.  My criticism is that they do not have to prepare for quality opponents week in and week out.  Lets look at the ranking and the strength of schedule of each team that they play courtesy of CBSSports.com.

–       TEAM………………………RANK………………………………SOS

–        VIRGINIA TECH…………..11……………………………..…….7

–        OREGON STATE………….17…………………………………..24

–        NEVADA……………………..41…………………………………..57

–        FRESNO STATE…………….48……………………….………69

–        WYOMING………………….62………………………………..59

–        IDAHO………………………..66……………….………………119

–        HAWAII………………………75………………………………..93

–        LA. TECH…………………….90………………………………..12

–        UTAH STATE………………..91…………………………..…114

–        TOLEDO………………………99………………………………76

–        SAN JOSE ST……………..110………………………………..20

–        NEW MEXICO ST………..112……………………………….98

While these are preseason rankings, Boise only plays two teams in the top 20 and five teams in the bottom 20 of the polls.  The simple fact is that the WAC is an inferior conference.  Boise is a great team, but they have out grown their conference.  They need to escape the WAC or they will forever be criticized for their schedule.  I understand that there is a lot more that goes into changing conferences than just saying it so, but for Boise State it is the only way to go.  If they are as committed to winning BCS Championships as they say they are then they should make the changes necessary.  It is called the BCS Championship for a reason, find a way to join a BCS conference and quit trying to take a short cut to a National Championship.

The argument that no one will agree to play you does not cut it in my book.  “Every one is scared to play us,” shouts a proud Bronco fan.  No you idiot, everyone else in college football plays in a conference whose competition is equal to their playing ability.   At least TCU and Utah have to play each other, even though I think both teams need to escape the Mountain West if they ever want to compete for a BCS title.  Florida State does not want to play you because they already have to play Miami, Clemson, North Carolina and Florida!  Need I remind Bronco fans of 2005 when the boys from Boise traveled to Athens?  Boise has not sniffed the SEC since.  The Broncos have played teams from the ACC and Pac-10 whom everyone agrees have been eroding in recent years.

Until the Broncos can join the Pac-10 or the Big 12 they do not deserve to play for the National Championship.  But, that is just my opinion, if you were in charge of the BCS what would you do?  Hypothetically, Ohio State is 12-0, Boise State is 12-0, Alabama is 12-1, Texas is 12-1, Florida State is 12-1 and all the teams won their conferences.  Who would you take?

Obviously, being the SEC fan that I am, and with the knowledge that the SEC is a superior I go with Alabama. Unfortunately, the BCS computer cares a lot more about losses than strength of schedule, so it would probably take Boise State at 12-0, sucks

Being a HUGE Alabama fan of course I think they will trump all. But to add to your blog in why Boise State fans should not get to thrilled just yet; James Madison just recently beat VA. Tech…One, like you said Zack, they took on a team who is probably considered one of the weakest teams in the SEC given, this is probably the only team who would give them a shot, however, they struggled up until the last few minutes to win this game. Had the Hoakies played smarter football they would have won that ball game. Throwing incomplete passes on crucial downs instead of keeping the clock running, poor play calling and execution in the last three minutes of the game led to the VA. Tech’s defeat. Point two, with James Madison winning over VA Tech, what does that say about this SEC team? Are they as accredible as they portray? But I agree all of these teams that want their fair shot at a Championship title need to come out of their weak conferences first and then play football and make your arguement based on that. Good to see your back to talking about sports again Zack. I look forward to hearing more of your postings.
